"I vividly remember when rap from the 1990s, specifically from Queensbridge, first hit Switzerland," 2x Juxtapoz cover artist Grotesk says. "One night, Mobb Deep's 'Shook Ones, Part II,' video aired for the first time on TV, perfectly matching the NY world I had envisioned. The atmosphere, locations, crew vibes, Hennessy jerseys, boots, rooftop hangouts, menacing attitude, and drives on the QB bridge—all elements of this NY street anthem—created a powerful and defining New York classic. This iconic moment in hip-hop history was the inspiration for my latest creation."
That creation is now P, a walnut and beech wood sculpture of the famed Mobb Deep member Prodigy, who passed away in 2017. The editioned work was created once again in collaboration with Case Studyo, who have worked wtih Grotesk in the past on hip-hop icons like the 2016 Biggie wood sculpture. "We kept it minimal, raw, and colorful to match the rest of the crew," Grotesk says.
